How to sign a PDF document for free

Signing a PDF no longer means printing it, signing it with a pen and scanning it. Today you can sign it in a minute in your browser, with your finger on a phone or with the mouse on a computer. Here's how to do it for free.

In 30 seconds

  • Upload the PDF, draw your signature with your finger or mouse, place it and download it: under a minute.
  • It's free, with no sign-up and no watermarks, and the document never leaves your device.
  • It's a valid electronic signature under the European eIDAS regulation.

Sign a PDF in 4 steps

  1. Open the tool. Go to Sign for free on your phone or computer. No need to sign up or install anything.
  2. Upload the document. Tap "Choose document" and pick the PDF. If you only have it on paper, take a photo of it: that works too.
  3. Choose "Me" and sign. Tap "Add signature", draw your signature with your finger or mouse and tap the spot on the document where it goes. You can move it and resize it. If needed, also add the date or some text.
  4. Download or send it. Tap "Finish" and choose "Download" to save it, or "Send by email" to send it to whoever asked for it.

If someone else has to sign

When you need a signature from a client, an employee or a family member, there's no need to send it for them to print. In the second step choose "Someone else":

  • Tap the document to mark where they need to sign.
  • If you need them to fill in details, add boxes for name, ID number, address, date or an "I agree" tick box.
  • Enter their name and email. They get a link, open it on their phone, fill in what you ask and sign.
  • You receive the completed, signed PDF in your inbox, with a proof of signature.

What type of signature is it?

It's an electronic signature as defined by the European eIDAS regulation: your mark linked to the document you sign. It works for most everyday documents: consent forms, quotes, delivery notes, simple contracts or forms. We explain it in more detail in Are electronic signatures legally valid?

Tips to get it right

  • Sign slowly and big: the signature then fits the box by itself.
  • If the document has several pages, scroll to the page where the signature goes before tapping.
  • Before sending it, check the signature doesn't cover any text.
  • Always keep a copy of the signed document.
